Notification of food supplements is mandatory before the product is first placed on the national market, under Decreto-Lei n. º 118/2015 de 23 de junho. Notification, free of charge, is made to DGAV, the Portuguese Competent Authority, and consists of sending the “Notification Dossier” electronically. After notification of the food supplement, it can be placed on the market immediately.

All changes made, whether to the product or to the labelling, must be communicated to DGAV, as a change to the notification procedure, sending supporting documents for said change.

The person responsible for placing the food supplement(s) on the market, manufacturer or distributor, if the product originates from one of the Member States of the European Union (EU), or the importer, if the product originates from a third country, is also responsible for the notification process, and is always responsible for ensuring compliance with legal requirements.
